Apprenticeships

Honing talent that would have been otherwise wasted is something we are passionate about championing.

Currently there are very limited opportunities for young creative people to train in historical fashion, dressmaking and tailoring here in Scotland.

We want to change that.

Given our rich textile and dress heritage, this situation cannot continue.

Làmhan has started to level the playing field by offering flexible apprenticeships to two young & talented historical dressmakers.

Chelsea and Courtney are on the start of their learning journey with us and over the next few years will be expanding their knowledge of historical sewing, dressmaking and tailoring techniques - including focussing heavily on zero waste pattern making which were commonplace in previous centuries- and also looking at how these techniques can be used to help reduce the huge amount of textile waste and deadstock fabrics from Scottish textile producers.

Apprenticeships in tailoring have been around for centuries, and nowadays tend to be in London around Savile Row. There is little opportunity for young Scottish people, especially those from working class backgrounds, to train to set up their own businesses in historical tailoring and dressmaking.

We are starting to change that.
